Activities and ClimateThe entire region has a large number of sports activities. Mountaineering, trekking and rock climbing are made available through various outdoor pursuit specialists within the area, who have competent guides and instructors. Naturally, there is a large number of sporting activities associated with the sea and the rivers, such as surfing and canoeing. The Picos offer an inexhaustible opportunity for walking and sight seeing. Horse riding and cycling are also on offer. If there is one characteristic that defines this area, it is the great number of clean, beautiful beaches along its coastline, each with its own particular personality. Llanes, Cangas de Onis and Ribadesella have plenty to offer by way of nightlife, but do not expect the bars and clubs of the South. Oviedo has a large cinema complex and extensive shopping centre at Parque Principado. The north of Spain has always had a well-deserved reputation for its rainy climate, but, even so, the coastline between Ribadesella and Unquerra enjoys a special microclimate that allows the growth of oranges and avocados. Palm trees grow in gardens alongside indigenous species like oak and chestnut. The summer months are predominantly sunny, however, they can be interspersed with rain. The spring and autumn seasons are more changeable, but can still produce pleasant weather for long periods. Although the climate of Northern Spain is less predictable than that of the South, it does provide the advantage of avoiding the excessively high temperatures of other areas of Spain. The Spanish themselves find this very attractive and many choose Asturias for their own holidays. ![]() |
